On Stories and Memories

I haven't a clue how memory works but I do know that mine is incredibly creative for it does remember things that never happened. There are also stories that I clearly recall and prefer not to check whether they are true or not – for the simple reason that I treasure them.

One of them concerns the late Cassius Clay, who, when about to be sent to fight in Vietnam, responded: I do not have any problems with these guys over there. and so I won't go. If you have problems with them, you go.

Another story I'm fond of: Many years ago, the then Swiss foreign minister, a social democrat, gave a speech that the media praised for being almost revolutionary. The minister however wasn't that pleased: Who the fuck wrote this speech?, he furiously wanted to know after he had left the stage.

Another foreign minister, not Swiss but South African, after addressing a crowd at a political rally during the times of Apartheid: To my supporters, let me say: Get back home safely, as to the others, who am I to tell them what to do?
