Observations in Osaka and Kyoto

I'm not suprised that I find toothbrush, pyjama, and razor in "my" hotel room in Osaka. I remember that from my first visit to Japan six years ago. I'm however surprised that "my" hotel in Kyoto doesn't provide these amenities. Very well then, I'm thinking to myself, this is probably the price that you pay when you choose to check-in a robot-assisted hotel although it later turned out that I had been wrong for all the usual amenites were actually provided (they simply were not in the room but had to be picked up next to the reception).

This is my second time (the other was in Delhi) that I'm staying in a room without windows. It irritates me.

Osaka, 25 September 2025

When I arrive for breakfast, I'm greeted with signs in English that explain what is what. There is also a sign in Italian that states one should limit breakfast time to 40 minutes.

If you are not into big crowds, Japan is probably not for you. The masses that populate Kyoto Station or Osaka Station are hard to believe. Moreover, that these places function is a remarkable feat.

A couple from Australia who has seemingly done all the required tourist-things lets me know that to get up early in order to avoid the crowds is an absolute must. They sounded somehow stressed and so I've decided to skip anything remotely touristic. I do however pass by some temples and also venture into a park that pretty much looks like parks usually do. But then I come across a temple and a park reminiscent of the Zen-pictures in my head and I feel truly  enchanted.

Kyoto, 27 September 2025

My first encounter with things Japanese I had when, at the age of 17, I read Zen-Buddhism and Psychoanalysis by Suzuki, Fromm and de Martino. It had a lasting effect on me for I can still recall what I perceive to be essential to Zen: Not to analyse but to experience.

My walks through Osaka and Kyoto take me mostly along side streets that are often empty and radiate a quietness that I experience as magic. Moreover, these vibes make me feel present in a way that I rarely sense.
